When you begin your journey to a healthy, loving and compassionate relationship with food, it’s almost inevitable that people in your life will tell you that you’re wrong.
Health at Every Size can’t possibly be a thing. It won’t work. You can’t eat what you want when you want and still feel great. You can’t be happy if you’re not thin. You can’t trust your body or the date – just look at conventional wisdom and all the facts we’ve grown up with knowing to be absolutely correct.
It’s hard enough to make this change for yourself when you’re not being attacked by others, but it’s even harder and more intimidating to reconnect with your true hungers when others are constantly trying to convince you that what’s been known forever is what’s right – even if it doesn’t work.
Unfortunately, the movement to accept and love your body the way it is is still only a marginalized movement and most people still want to believe that our body is a machine without emotions, that we only need discipline and willpower to be thin and thus – naturally – be super healthy and live a long life; no matter our mental health and our pure agony.
I explore this topic in this week’s episode of the Escape Diet Prison Podcast. I share my experiences with people who are adamant that I am wrong, that you can’t be healthy if you are not thin, that you need to weigh yourself to know if you feel well, that you can’t ever eat what you want when you want because you’ll never stop eating. I also talk about my favorite ways to deal with these situations and how to not get crushed by what other people think about your new choices.
