weight gain and binges

In this episode of the Escape Diet Prison Podcast, Deb and I tackle two critical aspects of breaking free from diet culture: the initial weight gain that may occur when letting go of restrictive diets and how to manage the binges that can accompany a restrictive mindset.

The Fear of Initial Weight Gain and Binges

One of the biggest fears when you stop dieting is the possibility of gaining weight. After years of trying to shrink yourself, allowing your body to settle at its natural weight feels terrifying. But here’s the truth: your body needs time to adjust.

When you let go of dieting, your body may hold on to more weight temporarily as it learns to trust you again. Dieting has taught your body that food might not always be available, so it enters survival mode. By eating regularly and giving your body the nourishment it craves, you’re teaching it that it’s safe—and over time, it will relax.

This process might be uncomfortable, but it’s necessary for true healing.

Managing Binges and Weight Gain When Letting Go of Restriction

Binging often stems from years of deprivation and restriction. When you tell yourself you can’t have something, it becomes the only thing you want. The moment you allow yourself to eat freely, it’s common to overeat because your body and mind are unsure when they’ll get this freedom again.

But binge eating during this phase isn’t a failure; it’s part of the recovery process. Here’s how to navigate it:

  • Neutralize Foods: Stop labeling foods as “good” or “bad.” When all foods are allowed, the desire to binge on previously forbidden items fades over time.
  • Eat Regularly: Skipping meals or waiting until you’re ravenous can trigger binges. Aim for balanced meals at consistent intervals to stabilize your hunger cues.
  • Pause, Don’t Punish: If you feel a binge coming on, take a moment to pause. Ask yourself: Am I physically hungry, or is there something else going on? Even if you do binge, avoid shaming yourself afterward. Shame only perpetuates the cycle of frequent binges, which may lead to weight gain.

Building a Healthy Relationship with Food

Recovery isn’t just about stopping diets; it’s about learning to reconnect with your body and its needs. It’s about understanding that weight gain isn’t inherently bad and that binge eating doesn’t define you.

Deb and I explore these ideas in depth during this episode, sharing personal insights and practical tips to help you navigate this challenging yet transformative journey.
