It’s that time of the year where most of us start thinking about going on vacation, which can cause allllll kinds of anxiety, can’t it?
Vacations used to be hell for me for all kinds of reasons: we’d eat out a lot, I wouldn’t be able to count calories and measure my thighs, arms, waist, I wouldn’t have my routine, my time at the gym, my ways of making sure I wouldn’t lose control.
Vacation meant gaining weight and when I was 11 years old, I even took my scale with me to the South of France.
It was a horror trip with lots of tears and fights about me gaining weight and being fat, ugly, disgusting.
I remember my mom trying to navigate between supporting me in not eating “too much” because she knew I was going to have a breakdown later and urging me to be like other girls – walking around in a bathing suit without worrying about gaining a pound or two on vacation.
It was a fine line to walk and either way, we always ended up in a huge screaming match because our nerves were on edge.
Today, I’m embarrassed and really sorry for having put my mom through crap like that on her well-deserved vacation.
But that’s what being at war with your body does to you and your family, right? You are constantly living in hell, fear, agony and shame. You are walking the edge.
You’re constantly suffering, hurting, wishing you were someone else, different, better, enough.
I know, I used to wish I was a completely different person.
Here’s what I usually thought:
- I’m fat
- If I eat like others I’ll gain tons of weight
- My body is ugly
- People judge me
- I will never be happy in this body
- I’ll have to diet all of my life
- I can’t have a career because I’m too fat
- I’ll never have a partner who truly respects me for being me and instead I’ll always be with men who simply want me to be skinny
Do any of these sound familiar?
