2024 year in review

2024 was one of those years—the kind where everything shifts, bends, and somehow finds its place. It was packed with intense adventures, big decisions, and more challenges than I had energy for (but tackled anyway). From running seven marathons on seven continents to cheering Johann on as he crushed milestones of his own, this year wasn’t just about doing the hard stuff—it was about proving that we could. Here’s my 2024 Year in Review—a reflection on the moments that shaped this incredible year.

Life threw curveballs, sure. There were health hiccups, chaotic puppy energy (Happy, you legend), and some seriously sleepless nights. But 2024 reminded me of what I’m made of. It wasn’t perfect—it was life. And it was glorious.

2024 Year in Review – The Highlights

Running Across the World: The Great World Race

Let’s start with the big one: The Great World Race. Seven marathons. Seven continents. Seven days. Why? Because I’m apparently allergic to sitting still and love testing the limits of my sanity. Running in Antarctica? Unreal. Setting personal records in Cape Town and Perth? Who even am I? Surviving Istanbul’s night race with questionable visibility and zero energy left? Heroic. Miami, the final stop, almost broke me. Almost. Crossing that finish line felt like taking a piece of the world and calling it mine. I’m now the fastest German woman in the 7 Continents Marathon Club, but honestly? It’s the people I met along the way who left the biggest mark.

Team Johann: Karate, Trumpets, and Growing Up

This year was all about Johann stepping into his awesomeness. He switched schools, earned his green belt in karate, and picked up the trumpet like he’s been destined to torment our ears (but I love him for it). Watching him navigate challenges—whether it was learning English vocab or surviving his first ski trip—was both heartwarming and hilarious. Oh, and did I mention his feet are officially clown-sized? My little boy isn’t so little anymore.

Chaos, Thy Name Is Happy

Enter Happy, our new puppy, who came in like a furry wrecking ball. Socks were chewed, schedules shattered, and yet, this tiny being somehow made our world softer and warmer. Happy was the unexpected chaos we didn’t know we needed.

Building and Leading: Professional Growth

This year, I stepped into a bigger leadership role, juggling finances, team dynamics, and marketing strategies—all while navigating an industry in constant flux. It was intense, challenging, and exactly where I thrive. I may have worked my butt off, but the results were worth it.

More Memorable Moments

  • Crying (a lot) at Johann’s elementary school graduation—how is my baby already so grown up?
  • Running through a closed-off Times Square! Unreal.
  • Johann as ring bearer at my cousin’s wedding—pride was an understatement.
  • Two Taylor Swift concerts (Liverpool and Zurich)—still screaming “All Too Well.”
  • Pentecost holidays in South France—sunshine, baguettes, and pure bliss.
  • The bittersweetness of moving houses again, preparing for what’s (hopefully) the U.S. move.
  • Crying (a lot) at Johann’s elementary school graduation—how is my baby already so grown up?

2024 Year in Review – Wrap-Up

What I’m Proud Of:

  • Crossing seven finish lines in The Great World Race.
  • Watching Johann face every new challenge with courage and quiet determination.
  • Leading my team through a tough but transformative year.

Signing up for The Great World Race. It terrified me, but that’s exactly why it mattered.

Best Decision of 2024

First Times:

  • Running on Antarctic ice—yes, it’s as cold as it sounds.
  • Becoming a puppy mom—10/10 recommend if you enjoy adorable destruction.
  • Watching Johann grow into a young man.
  • Johann’s first ski trip
  • Having a puppy in our home.
  • Flying on a private jet and calling it home for 6 days!
  • Meeting Becs Gentry!
  • Being away from Johann for 2 weeks!

Important Lessons:

  • You don’t know your limits until you push them.
  • I thrive when I pursue WIGs!
  • Follow your heart, even if it doesn’t make sense.
  • Courage pays off.
  • Never take health for granted.

Let’s adjust this to reflect your values and truth about body confidence, self-love, and food freedom.

Body Confidence, Self-Love, and Food Freedom in 2024

Reviewing 2024, I’m reminded, yet again, that body confidence and food freedom aren’t about reaching a magical “perfect” state—they’re about showing up for myself, no matter what. It’s about realizing that self-love isn’t the big, sweeping gestures—it’s in the small, everyday moments.

This year was full of those moments: enjoying croissants in South France without guilt, fueling my body for The Great World Race without obsessing about calories or macros, and appreciating what my body can do rather than focusing on how it looks. Running across seven continents didn’t make me love my body more—it deepened my respect for it. For how it kept going, for how it healed, for how it stayed with me every step of the way.

Food freedom isn’t something I had to fight for this year—it is a part of my life, woven into the way I live now. It’s not about never thinking about food, but about making choices from a place of trust, ease, and respect. Whether I am snacking with Johann or grabbing fuel before a run, food isn’t the enemy—it is just food. And that’s the beauty of it.

Body confidence doesn’t come from the big races or milestones. In 2024, it came from the quiet moments—stretching after a run, resting when I needed to, and accepting myself on the hard days. It’s not about loving every inch of myself 24/7—it’s about not letting my worth depend on it.

2024 wasn’t about transforming my relationship with food and my body – I’ve done the work years ago – it was about living in the freedom I’ve worked so hard to create. And that joy and pride, more than anything, is what I’m taking with me into 2025.

Looking Ahead to 2025

Turn “impossible” into “inevitable”: Set audacious goals and reverse-engineer them step by step.

What I’ll Do Differently in 2025

Adventures to Come:

  • More marathons (but let’s keep it on one continent at a time, okay? Orrr maybe not?!).
  • Making that long-dreamed-of move to the U.S. a reality.

My 7 Goals for 2025:

  1. Keep showing up for Johann as he continues to grow.
  2. Make relationships and connection a core focus.
  3. Train smarter, not harder, for my next big challenge.
  4. Write a book that feels like a conversation
  5. Run more marathons—or wilder adventures.
  6. Move to a new home, a new city, or even a new country.
  7. Fall in love.

Limits? I don’t see any.

Motto for 2025

Conclusion:

Reviewing the year 2024, I see that it wasn’t perfect, but it was real. It was messy, magical, exhausting, and exhilarating. It reminded me of what matters most: the people we love, the dreams we chase, and the courage to show up, day after day, even when it’s hard. Here’s to another year of doing just that.

As we head into 2025, I want to ask you: What would it look like for you to step into true freedom? To let go of the shame, the rules, and the never-ending battles with food and your body?
